Call for submissions on infant formula standards reveiw

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for submissions on its assessment of standards for infant formula products.

FSANZ has reviewed infant formula standards in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) through Proposal P1028 - Infant formula.

FSANZ interim CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said the review covers infant formula (for use from newborn), follow-on formula (for use from six to 12 months of age) and infant formula for special dietary use.

“Our review aims to ensure regulation of infant formula is clear, reflects the latest scientific evidence and aligns with international standards,' Dr Cuthbert said.

“Although breastfeeding is the recommended way to feed a baby, a safe and nutritious substitute for breast milk is needed for babies who are not breastfed.

“Infant formula must be safe for formula-fed infants to consume, and caregivers need to know how to prepare, use and store the product safely.'

The call for submissions provides a summary of FSANZ's assessment of the proposal and sets out preferred options for potential variations to the Code.

It is the first of two legislated calls for submissions, with the second to include proposed drafting of the revised standard.

In Australia and New Zealand, infant formula products are regulated primarily through Standard 2.9.1 - Infant Formula and Schedule 29 of the Code.

FSANZ has reviewed a range of matters including the regulatory framework, safety, food technology, nutrient composition, labelling and product representation.

Submissions close at 6pm (Canberra time) 10 June 2022
