New edition: Principles and Practices of Dietary Exposure Assessment for Food Regulatory Purposes 2024

Published

The 2024 edition of the Principles and Practices of Dietary Exposure Assessment for Food Regulatory Purposes is now available, offering updated guidance on how FSANZ conducts dietary exposure assessments.

Dietary exposure assessment estimates how much of a chemical people consume through food, either across a population or within specific groups. FSANZ conducts these assessments using data on food chemical concentrations and food consumption patterns sourced from a variety of studies and surveys.

The document is regularly revised to reflect advancements in regulatory science and serves as a key reference for understanding:

  • the principles FSANZ follows when conducting dietary exposure assessments
  • the processes used to estimate dietary exposure to food chemicals
  • how we use information, including data submitted in applications, to estimate dietary exposure.

The guide outlines practices for assessing dietary exposure to a wide range of food chemicals, including food additives, contaminants, natural toxicants, agricultural and veterinary chemical residues, nutrients, novel ingredients, processing aids and packaging chemicals.

It highlights our commitment to science-based dietary exposure assessments, supporting informed decisions and trust in food safety across Australia and New Zealand.
